As the fans of Boyzone begin to recover from the shock of untimely and sudden death of the lead singer of the band, Stephan Gately, the unasked questions return to haunt. Such talent, such bright future… all lost over a cocktail of drugs and alcohol in the name of merriment.
The cause of death is given by the court officials on the island of Majorca is—Natural. Gately suffered from pulmonary oedema. In layman’s language, fluid accumulated in his lungs choking him. It seems to confirm the earlier rumours that Gately had a marathon drinking binge lasting over eight hours before he returned to his apartment in Port Andratx with his partner Andrew Cowles after a wild night of partying. He fell asleep on sofa, choked on his own vomit sometime later and died in his sleep.
Certainly not a person to be bound by norms, he stunned the industry as well as the fans when he declared that he was gay about 10 years ago. He tied the knot with his partner Andrew in 2006 in a civil union.
Immensely talented, he walked in for an audition for Ireland’s first boyband in 1993 and never looked back. The band proved to be hugely popular and wildly successful with six number one singles in Britain. The split came in 2000 but the boys returned seven years later.
As the music fraternity mourns the loss, may be its time to look for answer of those questions that nobody asks. Why partying and having fun in Hollywood is synonymous with boozing and drugs? How many more Gatelys will be lost before a night of fun would not mean choking on one’s own vomit?
