Seems like NBC’s desperation to make the funny man, Conan O’Brien leave The Tonight Show is reaching new heights. Now what else can one say after coming across reports according to which the network is all set to close a deal that might cost it millions just to make Conan leave the show that he was hired to host only in May last year. It is being speculated that the network has already agreed to pay O’Brien $25 million and the amount might increase depending upon the period of unemployment of the stand up comedian.
O’Brien had been successfully hosting the “Late Night” show before he took up the responsibility of hosting “The Tonight Show” for NBC. However, his success with “Late Night” could not help him win the hearts of millions of fans of “The Tonight Show”. As a result the ratings of the show tumbled down and were never the same as at the time of the previous host Jay Leno. However, the main reason for the rift between NBC and Conan O’Brien is speculated to the proposed deviation in the allotted time slot for the show, which the host had vehemently rejected.
Incidentally, Jay Leno, who had moved on to host another primetime talk show, also did not do too well and with the announcement about the cancellation of his show, NBC hopes to get him back for “ The Tonight Show”. But who hosts “The Tonight Show” is another issue, with the prime focus currently being on how much O’Brien’s departure is going to cost NBC. Sources close to both the parties claim that the ultimate amount will depend on a number of factors including the terms of contract, his remaining time with NBC and even his employment conditions in the future.
